prismatic projections

This proposal experiments with the way the physical world can build a sense of anticipation for information through fragmented visual/spatial relationships. The Prismatic Projection Pavilion does this by providing distorted glimpses of images; full legible images are only revealed to viewers who choose to actively pursue them.

The facade is constructed from a series of interlocking posts that support translucent material cut into diamonds. These posts rotate independently of each other and are able to fragment projected images to varying degrees. In rotating they also open up views into the interior of the pavilion and reveal more images projected onto its interior surfaces.

The rotation also responds to the activity within the pavilion. When there is an event such a film screening or discussion, the facade would become static allowing the projected images to become legible for everyone within. Alternatively, when the pavilion is empty, the fragmented face would be transforming- enticing new participants into the space.

After the pavilion's time has ended, the individual posts are disconnected from each other and can then either be re-assembled for other outdoor events or possibly be used as free-standing sources of light for outdoor events (beer and dogs, for example). This would allow the GSD to make a lasting investment with its money rather than spend it on something temporary.
